Hannah graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology and got his bachelor in electrical engineering in 1977 . He then went on to get his masters in 1978 and a Ph.D., in 1985. Hannah was one of the co-founders of Silicon Graphics Inc. and created many computer programs such as Personal IRIS, Indigo, Indigo 2, and Indy Graphics. His programs are still used today and they help make graphics in all kinds of movies. Hannah was awarded the Professional Achievement award from the National Technical Association in 1987.
